🪐 AU WORKSHOP

AU WORKSHOP

TIMELINE
2024-2100: Foundations of Change

  • 2057: An international agreement known as the Great Climate Accord is reached to combat climate change, with ambitious goals for reducing carbon emissions, transitioning to renewable energy, and preserving biodiversity.
  • 2060: The development and deployment of advanced green technologies, including carbon capture and sustainable agriculture accelerates. This marks the beginning of a major shift towards environmental sustainability.
  • 2068: The first commercially viable fusion reactor is developed, providing a nearly limitless and clean energy source. This technological leap greatly reduces humanity's reliance on fossil fuels.
  • 2075: Massive efforts in the great ocean restoration project are made to restore damaged marine ecosystems and halt the acidification of oceans, leading to the gradual recovery of marine biodiversity.
  • 2100: Despite significant progress, the late 21st century sees a severe environmental collapse due to previous delays in action and unexpected consequences. Only half of Earth's surface remains viable for human habitation.
2101-2200: Expansion and Innovation

  • 2120: The United Planet successfully establishes the first permanent base on Mars, "New Horizon," to conduct research and prepare for future colonization.
  • 2195: Revolutionary hard-light technology is developed, allowing the creation of highly flexible and durable holographic interfaces and structures.
2201-2300: The Age of Change

  • 2224: The first Hybrids are created.
  • 2247: The Elheen became the First Contact with an alien species for humanity.
  • 2250: An asteroid collision destroys Tellus' moon, causing widespread panic and a significant impact on tidal forces and satellite operations.
  • 2275: The Tellurian Space Academy is established as a prestigious institution for training future generations of space explorers and researchers.
  • 2289: Genetic eugenics is banned.
2301-2400: Challenges and Advancements

  • 2350: Advances in cryosleep technology enable long-duration space travel, allowing crew members to remain in stasis during extended missions beyond the solar system.
  • 2389: Mechs are classified as a species.
  • 2400: New biomechanical technologies are introduced, allowing for advanced integration of human and machine capabilities, improving both medical treatments and operational efficiency.
2401-2524: The New Frontier

  • 2439: The Hybrid Liberation Act is passed.
  • 2427: A stable wormhole is discovered leading to the Andromeda Galaxy, opening new avenues for exploration and colonization.
  • 2464: The Mnemosyne embarks on its historic mission to explore galaxies beyond the Milky Way, carrying a crew of 300 and 100,000 settlers in cryosleep.
2525: The Current Era

Humanity stands on the brink of new discoveries and challenges as the Mnemosyne ventures into uncharted territories, navigating through both known and unknown cosmic phenomena!

CURSE WORDS/TURNS OF PHRASE

[personal profile] skyscrapes 2024-09-14 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I assume a universal translator is in play so we don't have to conlang what the language actually sounds like, but considering I don't speak mandarin, hindi or urdu:

Does anyone have ideas for neat evolved turns of phrases, or know of/want to share Chinese/Hindi/etc specific idioms and the like?

Re: DISABILITIES

[personal profile] skyscrapes 2024-09-14 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Broadly, a lot of disabilities stem from genetic and physical things that aren't necessarily easy to fix, especially with regards to the brain and nerve damage. You did mention in star trek people still ended up disabled for various reasons and didn't opt to get fixed, so I could see a line of thought here, kind of along the lines of GATTACA.

While the setting allows for full up fixing, it's still generally a costly procedure and many people don't view their disabilities as something that needs to be 'cured' or pursued a job that paid them that much. As long as they can perform their job to specifications, they're allowed on ship, ie: a communications officer born with no legs using a wheelchair is fine, though you might see someone with the same disability in security using prosethetic legs instead.

The reason I say two is that despite how nice the setting is, eugenics via genetic modification is always a concern and in GATTACA the setting explicitly was about the 'superiority' of genetically modified people vs those without. It's also a RL issue that is VERY thorny, not pointing fingers either way just that it is one.

So you may want to dodge explicitly stating that everything can be fixed, and leave it in the player wheelhouse for what they want to do. I think the least thorny response would be removing the 'everything can be fixed!' with 'everything has the option to be fixed, but it is ultimately left up to player discretion as long as they are able enough to perform their duty on ship'.

I think the death mechanics as is make a lot of sense! You could pull a bit from star trek - maybe the ship records a 'pattern' of the person, and thus that 'pattern' reflects any disabilities the character had at time of death. Or it could be a case by case basis - maybe people want the ship to modify things if the character dies.

As a disabled person I thought I’d chime in!

I would suggest futuristic mobility/assistance devices as an alternative to mods. Perhaps some people don’t feel comfortable getting mods (since it is invasive) or there’s certain cultural complications, and thus some people could chose to use aides instead of mods.

In regards to illnesses… maybe all things can be treated but some things can’t be cured. Characters could have treatments with them (medication or otherwise) that allows them to do their job fine, but still allows the existence of the illness.

Also — there could be flexible requirements on disability ICly on the ship! Some sectors are going to need different physical needs than others — ie you could probably function as a blind botanist, but maybe not as a pilot.

Another good option is also advanced prosthetics instead of mods — ie something that can be removed. That’s what I was thinking for Daan’s eye.

These are just my person opinion and shouldn’t be an end all be all! Generally the idea that a person doesn’t have to be full ā€œabled bodiedā€ to still contribute, and that some conditions are fine if they’re just treated but not cured

I think this says it very well!

Disability is so… (waves hands) are we not all disabled in some way

I’m happy to help. Erring on the side of player choice & allowing options without hard cures is usually my go to for rp.

Yeah! I always try to think of the glasses situation for coming up with disability stuff in settings.

Some people have glasses, some have contacts, and some get laser surgery. All three work to correct vision but they depend on what the person feels comfortable with doing!

MEDIA

MB does a lot of media binging so I'm going to have to come up with a lot of shows/books/music that exists in the future for that purpose!

Current potentials:

Lagoberra Nights (think sex and the city or real housewives)
The Anomaly In Theta-12 (space horror)
Render It (a Bob Ross style program teaching people how to make various things via at home 3D printing)
Friends (2459) (the 19th friends reboot)

Herlock Sholmes, the classic detective stories

OTHER LANGUAGES

[personal profile] tarakan 2024-12-06 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
While Tellurian is the official language and one of the most widely spoken on the planet, there are other languages spoken, especially on fringe colonies near the edge of the viable regions.

One of them is Uralian. The accent sounds similar to IRL Russian but because it's associated with fringe colonies away from major metropolitan areas, it's got a bit of an implication of being a hick or a yokel. People try to lose their Uralian accent if they go to higher education, important positions in the government, etc. etc. The language uses a different sentence structure than Tellurian, leading to a bit of broken Tellurian when a native Uralian speaker is learning the language.

aka 'let's come up with an in-universe reason for why Hilbert has his accent and what his accent actually IS'

The CAL-10 PE Status medical bracelets are referred to affectionately as "leashes" by some of the crew, as they have a tendancy to beep annoyingly when you're doing something you shouldn't be doing (like getting into fights, or not sleeping enough/drinking enough water/otherwise wearing yourself down). There's an indicator light on the band that shows green-orange-red for a quick visual check of the wearer's health status.
