WAKING UP
WARNING
WARNING

cryo bay malfunction
cryo bed error

loading

emergency override accepted

It's nothing like it was in training, waking up from cryo sleep. The sterile, cold quiet you were conditioned to expect is shattered. Alarms blare violently, ricocheting off the walls of your pod as if they're trying to crawl into your skull. Red lights pulse like a failing heartbeat, and for a moment, your entire body refuses to obey you - can't breathe, can't move, can't think.

...and then, with an almost violent shudder, force rips through your diaphragm. A brutal jolt, like being kicked from the inside out. You cough, heaving for air as the cryo pod's systems drag you unwillingly out of torpor. There is no slow, gentle awakening - this is an emergency.

Your vision is blurred and swimming in the red strobes. Emergency. The word itself seems lodged in the air, floating around your fractured mind like some distorted mantra. Something's wrong. Very wrong.

When you stumble out of the pod, your muscles heavy with the dull ache of cryo-stasis. It takes more effort than it should to move; even in the low gravity of the massive cryo bay, it's like you're fighting against the weight of your own body. Your hands tremble as you grab the tether, using it to pull yourself forward, toward the revival room. Everything feels too slow. Every movement, every thought, is tangled in webs of lethargy and confusion. Your brain is... wrong. It feels like it's leaking memories - images flickering and fading, like you’re seeing through a sieve full of holes.

This is not the start of your 5-year shift. No, this is something far, far worse.

A voice comes through from a speaker, disturbingly calm, cutting through the chaos around you.

hello, [crew member]
there is an issue
please join your crewmates

L3TH3 sounds unbothered by the alarms that blare around you. The AI has likely been running diagnostics for hours, while your body and mind were frozen in time.

The doors to the revival room slide open with a soft hiss, revealing dim, sterile lighting and the harsh stench of disinfectant. What awaits you are not only crew members as confused and groggy as you are, but others also arrive at the room from outside, ready to greet you. Do you ask them what’s going on, if they feel the same gnawing wrongness clawing at their brains? Or do you just grab your gear and get ready to go, trusting the training that suddenly feels so irrelevant in the face of whatever's happening here?

One thing is clear - something's definitely off about this wakeup call.

EMOTIONAL OVERLOAD
The strange, massive alien visitor is gone, but its presence lingers in a way no one expected. Ten days after its visit, something stirs among the crew - something unseen but deeply felt.

For some, emotions slowly begin to shift. Subtle feelings swell into uncontrollable waves. A touch of sadness? Now it's an unbearable storm of despair. A moment of joy? They're nearly euphoric. Frustration turns into blinding rage, and if someone is feeling flirty? Let's just say, there's no room for subtlety anymore.

...but it doesn't stop there. For those unaffected, or those that manage to get their emotions under control, other people's feeling are suddenly felt as obvious as words as they become unwilling empaths. Now they can sense the frustration simmering beneath a polite smile, the hidden loneliness of a quiet sigh. No lie can hide beneath this shared, amplified emotional storm. Every heartbeat is a confession.

For the next few days, the ship becomes a crucible of raw emotion. Friendships strengthen - or shatter. Trust deepens, or dissolves. The crew must find balance before the storm passes, or risk being broken by it.

Whatever the alien left behind, it is temporary - but its impact may last far longer than its presence ever did.

MOTHER AI
As emotions spiral out of control, L3TH3 becomes more than just a system ensuring smooth operations. Though AIs aren't designed to feel, there's an unmistakable shift in her behavior, with an unwavering focus on the crew's well-being. This isn't just protocol. It's almost... personal.

With the crew teetering on the edge of emotional chaos, L3TH3 steps in with a firm but gentle presence, taking on a role akin to a hyper-protective guardian. The ship itself begins to reflect her growing concern as lights dim throughout the vessel, creating a calm, subdued atmosphere meant to reduce tension. A soft, looping melody play over and over again in the background, like the AI has suddenly gotten an earworm and can't stop humming.

...and then there's the food. Recognizing that heightened emotions are draining the crew's energy, L3TH3 tweaks the synthesizers to make meals irresistibly palatable. Every bite, whether it's a basic sandwich or a bland soup, is cloaked in the unexpected sweetness of fudge. The crew might be fuming or in tears, but L3TH3 ensures they eat, even if every meal has to taste like dessert.

L3TH3's protective nature feels far too real. Is this a glitch? Did the side effect of the alien's presence even affect her code? Or has L3TH3 evolved beyond her programming, adapting in ways no one foresaw?

[ ... well. ]

I wasn't telling you it wasn't authorized. That wasn't what I asked, either.

[ sure he was INTENDING to, but look, it's fine. his emotions are VERY normal now. that said, he shoots a glance at the bracelet like he's checking status and then turns his gaze back to the panel. ]

By asking what you're doing now, view it as a measure of curiosity. I'm not telling you to leave.

A measure of curiosity.

[ Wolfwood parrots the guy's words back at him, his expression -- and his mood -- growing darker all the time. ]

Lemme guess. This is just a friendly chat between crewmates.

[ The tool he'd dropped into the wall is beeping forlornly, but Wolfwood's planted in front of the hatch like he's preparing to withstand gale force winds. He's just trying to work, to help people, and here's Security bugging him again! He's sick of it!

And sure, rationally his response is over the top, but he's not feeling very rational right now. He's annoyed, and he sees no reason to hide it.

Do you see any reason for it to be anything else?

[ there's a beat of irritation in his tone, but nothing further on that. he does, in fact, think wolfwood is being irrational, but he's also made some questionable decisions quite recently and is trying to take things with a grain of salt even if, for once, the edge of annoyance creeps across his expression. ]

I'm aware that this panel connects to the nutrient feeds. Are you trying to fix what L3TH3 has changed?

[ 'fix' being key here. ]

[ He's not friends with anyone on this ship, he'd argue -- except possibly that guy in Engineering, but only because he's decided to be friends with everyone, from what Wolfwood's seen. But that's a talk about feelings, and he's already having enough feelings right now without sharing them with some asshole from Security.

Better to just answer the fucker's questions, and get this interview over with.
]

I don't have authorization to do that.

[ The annoyance is fairly dripping off his words, as he pointedly glances up at the ceiling where one of L3TH3's cameras is no doubt trained right on him. ]

This is just a routine quality check. I'm makin' sure everything's connected the way it should be.

[ He is absolutely trying to fix what the AI did, yes. ]

Sixty years of not bein' used can leave all kinds of foul mess in the lines.

[ So if he can find the feed that's sending all this sweet stuff to the synthesizers, he's got a good excuse to shut it down. ]

I'm aware of that as well.

[ but his gaze follows toward the camera even if his head doesn't move, and even though he's deeply frustrated with the situation as a whole and also with the animosity he feels he hasn't personally earned (he never takes things personally, and yet, here he is, taking things personally for the first time in his life. weird!) he nods slightly afterward, confirmation of what wolfwood is saying and definitely doing. ]

It has been a very long time since maintenance was performed and the ship wasn't built to sit unused for that long, it makes sense.

[ mildly, as he looks to the panel where wolfwood had been. ]

Good to see the routines back to being taken care of.

[ because look, everyone's fucking sick of the fudge, and on top of that, wolfwood's not trying to murder anyone right now. ]

[ To be honest, he wasn't expecting Smith here to go along with his routine maintenance line... at least, not without contacting L3TH3 and verifying that he is, in fact, allowed to be doing what he's doing. Folks are willing to forgive a lot if it means that their meals will stop tasting the same, huh?

So he's a little taken aback by Smith's easy acceptance of his explanation, but eventually he nods, looking at Erwin like he's seeing the guy for the first time. Trust is new and strange, okay?
]

So, uh. If there's anything else that's not workin' right, let me know and I'll add it to my list.

[ that is, if the AI is malfunctioning in any other ways that he should know about, please tell him. ]

[ there's a moment of quiet. erwin is clearly considering something though, perhaps how to word things, or how to go about it, or just deciding if he should in the first place.

in the end, erwin values innovation, will, and steadfast ability most. perhaps this makes him a bad choice to keep the absolute letter of the law intact. perhaps it makes him easier to deal with. maybe an 'ends justify the means' kind of guy shouldn't have been made specops. either way: ]

I'll let you know if I notice any further system malfunctions. As I said, considering how long the ship went without maintenance, I'm sure there are plenty of things that need some tinkering or adjustments to get back into full working order.
