I think the death mechanics as is make a lot of sense! You could pull a bit from star trek - maybe the ship records a 'pattern' of the person, and thus that 'pattern' reflects any disabilities the character had at time of death. Or it could be a case by case basis - maybe people want the ship to modify things if the character dies.
